Veteran Journalist Says Fancy Farm Necessary Crucible For Senate Candidates

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- If you are a political junkie or you just like to feast on mouth watering Western Kentucky barbecue there’s really only one place to be this weekend.   Saturday's Fancy Farm picnic in Graves County draws thousands of folks for a fund raiser for Saint Jerome’s Parish and of course features highly partisan stump speeches from politicians across the commonwealth.  Al Cross, the director of UK’s Center for Rural Journalism and Community Issues has been making that trek for years.  He spoke Friday with WUKY's Alan Lytle about what to expect this year.

Grimes To Officially Kickoff Campaign Tonight In Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Almost a month after announcing she would run for the U.S. Senate, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes will kick off her campaign in her hometown of Lexington.

Grimes' campaign said Gov. Steve Beshear will join her for the event, scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The 34-year-old Democrat is seeking to unseat Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who will have served 30 years in the Senate when the election is held in November 2014.

Alison Lundergan Grimes Calls Mitch McConnell's Leadership Spiteful, Petty in Kick-Off Ad

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Speaking directly to Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, Democratic candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes says she plans to hold the GOP accountable in next year's election.

In a nearly four minute kick-off ad, Grimes says she doesn't always agree with President Obama, but that McConnell is blocking legislation that would've helped Kentuckians out of spite.

County Clerk Files Ethics Complaint Against Grimes

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A county clerk in southeastern Kentucky has asked the Executive Branch Ethics Commission to determine the propriety of a fundraising email sent to government email accounts by Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes last week.

Republican Laurel County Clerk Dean Johnson filed the complaint on Thursday, a week after receiving the email from Grimes, a candidate for U.S. Senate.

Bevin To Speak At Fancy Farm, Setting Up Early Confrontation With McConnell Forces

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Political tensions could rise to a fever pitch at next month’s Fancy Farm Picnic in Graves County, Kentucky.  WUKY has learned that newly declared Republican Senatorial candidate Matt Bevin will also speak at the event.

Bevin will share the stage with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and the top Democratic challenger, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes on Aug. 3.

Though the election isn't until next year, the campaign is in full swing. TV ads have been running for weeks already.

Newcomer Bevin, McConnell Engage In War Of Words

Tea Partier Matt Bevin officially announced his entry into the 2014 U-S Senate race at a rally Wednesday in Frankfort. He will challenge Mitch McConnell in the GOP primary

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Political newcomer Matt Bevin has declared the time has come for Kentucky voters to oust Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell, and offered up himself for a replacement.

Bevin criticized McConnell at a news conference in Frankfort on Wednesday for being a part of "the politics of failure" for nearly three decades while describing himself as a man of the people, having grown up in a farmhouse with wood stoves, a garden for vegetables, and land that provided assorted animals for meat, milk and eggs.

Louisville businessman Matt Bevin's entry into the race would force a major shift in the McConnell campaign, which has been concentrating entirely on Democratic opponent Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky's 34-year-old secretary of state.
