First Listen: Elvis Costello & The Roots, 'Wise Up Ghost'

The new documentary Muscle Shoals recalls how interracial harmony in tumultuous times made possible a new kind of music. Leading African-American artists traveled to North Alabama — not exactly a place they thought they'd be welcome in the civil rights era — to jam with an all-white crew of session players. In little rooms near the wide Tennessee River, they perfected soul and anticipated Southern rock.

Neko Case: 'I Couldn't Really Listen To Music' by NPR Staff

For a year and a half now, Morning Edition has been following the singer-songwriter as she worked on an album that would come to be titled The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You. It includes "Where Did I Leave That Fire," a song with a haunting question at its heart, and now we know that the singer who asked where she left that fire was feeling depressed. She felt like she was moving through life underwater.

First Listen: Sly And The Family Stone, Highlights From 'Higher!'

The story of Sylvester Stewart — we call him — is that of a great urban engineer who launched out of the Bay Area in 1967 with a series of bridge-making hits: fusing rock to rhythm and blues, bringing jazz and funk into the mainstream with a band that was black and white, male and female. The story takes a weird corner and ends (or at least peaks) with some chattery scary masterpieces, isolated midnight moanings, fear and dread as universal in the '70s as love had been a few years before.

First Listen: Neko Case, 'The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight...'

"Reveal myself when I'm ready / I'll reveal myself invincible soon," sings in "Ragtime," the mid-tempo ballad which closes her new record, The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You. But she's hardly concealed her identity or evaded examination in the album's first 11 songs: This is arguably the most unguarded and revealing of Case's six records...

First Listen: Bob Dylan, Highlights From 'Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)'

If 's long career as a genius of the American spirit has taught us anything, it's that one fan's trash is another one's treasure. "I never looked at songs as 'good' or 'bad,' only different kinds of good ones," he once said. Dylan's music, from the magpie folk of his early years to the historically conscious balladry of his current albums, has always reminded us that our legacy includes not just ennobling beauty, but also minstrelsy, dirty blues, sentimental sappiness and rama-lama-ding-dong...

Song Premiere: The Avett Brothers, 'Another Is Waiting' by Stephen Thompson

It hasn't even been 11 full months since released The Carpenter, the North Carolina band's most recent collection of poignant and infectious, bluegrass-inflected folk-rock. And, given the lengthy touring cycle that each major album release generally spawns — the Avetts of last month's Newport Folk Festival with songs from The Carpenter — fans had no reason to expect new music this year.
