Work Halted On Rupp Project

Mayor Jim Gray has suspended work on the controversial $350 million dollar Rupp Arena renovation project.

The move comes after the University of Kentucky withdrew its support for a proposed $10.7M dollar annual lease starting in 2018.

UK’s decision was discussed during meetings between the city, the university, and Gov. Steve Beshear. In a statement, Gray says the city designed the arena “based on what UK said they needed,” but the timing and pacing proved untenable.

For now, the project has been halted and Gray says the city will focus on the Town Branch Park project and development opportunities on the 20-acre High Street parking lot .
