WEG Traffic Plan Announced

By Alan Lytle

Lexington, KY – Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games CEO Jamie Link says motorists heading toward the Kentucky Horse Park literally won't be able to miss the signs.

"We will have more than 115 signs placed leading into the Kentucky Horse Park. Obviously, signage heavily on Interstates 64 and 75, the Bluegrass Parkway coming out of Versailles, Nicholasville Road, New Circle Road, then obviously Newtown Pike and Ironworks Pike leading into the Horse Park."

Lexington Police Commander Mike Blanton says there will also be extra patrols around the Horse Park throughout the sixteen days of competition.

"The biggest impact obviously is going to be on Ironworks Pike at the entrance to the Horse Park. But, motorists should also expect some delays on Newtown Pike, Georgetown Road, I 75 and 64. We will be assigning officers on traffic patrols at traffic posts each day starting with the move-in on September 24th and throughout all the days of the game including closing ceremonies on October 10th."

Bottom line, officials say, if you don't plan to attend the games, it's best to be working on alternate driving routes now; they say that will save you time and needless frustration later.

On another note, World Equestrian Games CEO Jamie Link is trying to clear up some misinformation about the distance patrons will be expected to travel from the parking lots to the main gate.

"The longest distance is eight city blocks. The average spectator is going to walk five city blocks or less. This is no different than parking in the purple lot at a UK football game, no different than walking from Macy's to Dillard's at Fayette Mall; that's about a half mile. So it's the same distance and we want people to understand that you're not walking a mile, or two miles, or three miles that we've seen some people say."

Link encourages patrons to car-pool or take the Lextran bus shuttle to the Horse Park.
