University Of Kentucky And National Guard Strengthen Ties
The University of Kentucky entered into an official partnership with the Kentucky National Guard Wednesday.
The agreement is meant to forge closer ties between the two and foster new areas of collaboration. UK President Eli Capilouto and Major General Ed Tonini shook hands after signing what’s called a Memorandum of Understanding Wednesday.
"This is an important day that I believe will develop into a myriad of different areas of cooperation and understanding," Gen. Tonini told the crowd at a signing ceremony.
Among the first collaborations will be an initiative allowing Nation Guard medics to shadow staff in the UK Chandler Hospital Emergency Department.
Dr. Roger Humphries is Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the hospital. He says the program will stress initial stabilization efforts, "so that the very first time they're exposed to it isn't in the middle of a war zone or a natural disaster where they're expected to perform at a very high level."
Many other collaborative projects are in the works in areas ranging from information sharing to athletics.
