UK's Multi-Million Dollar Science Building Ready For First Day Of Classes

The University of Kentucky is being considered the cream of the crop for science studies.

While there are still a few finishing touches that need to be done and a sidewalk that needs to be poured, students will fill the lecture halls and science labs in the new Academic Science Building.  Vincent Cassone is the Chairman of the Biology Department and Mark Meier Chairs the Department of Chemistry.  They gave us a tour of the state of the art $112 million dollar facility and said it’s been a draw for top notch researchers, professors and students. “The quality of chemistry and biology majors that are coming is improving dramatically.  We’ve added a major in neuroscience which is already some 200 students and we’re adding one in materials chemistry which we believe is going to draw in even more students.  This is going to be the fulcrum of a new growth in sciences at UK.”

Construction began in the fall of 2014.  The building has 12 technology enabled active learning classrooms, 21 teaching labs, student learning centers, ecological teaching spaces and interior green space.  The University estimates the new facility will impact more than 35 thousand students each year.
