UK Will Ask to Use Private Funds for New Scoreboards

By Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A plan to borrow money to pay for new scoreboards at the University of Kentucky's Commonwealth Stadium has been scuttled after a faculty group urged the board of trustees not to approve it.

The university said in a statement Thursday it is no longer asking for approval of an internal loan to the school's Athletics Association to partially pay for the project. Instead, the Athletics Association will ask the board of trustees to allow it to use private funds to pay for the scoreboards.

The UK Senate Council passed a resolution Monday saying it "strongly opposes" a $3.1 million loan for the project.

The athletics department is self-supporting, but university spokesman Jay Blanton said earlier this week the department's endowment funds are invested so it made more financial sense to purchase the new scoreboards under the proposed arrangement.
