A variety of student-led groups joined forces Thursday night to reach out to students worried about the ramifications of the 2016 presidential election.

A diverse array of University of Kentucky student groups are aligning as a show of solidarity after the election of President-elect Donald Trump. Thursday night, the organizations joined forces for a forum dubbed “We Are Not Alone.”

The evening at the Taylor Education Building began with poetry and a host of introductions – as representatives from UK Amnesty International, the Muslim Student Association, the Latino Student Union, and other groups signaled their support for students who are worried or feel threatened by the incoming administration.

UK student leader Della Mosley said the gathering was about taking those feelings seriously.

"A lot of people are grieving and mourning this future loss of rights that they're afraid of," she said. "We hope to facilitate spaces where people are able to do this more on their own as well as encourage other groups and administration and organizations to facilitate these type of events."

In total, the forum brought together 10 organizations for an evening of sharing and small group conversations.

UK officials have noted an uptick in reported racial, ethnic, and religious slurs in the days following the election, prompting a campus-wide email from UK President Eli Capilouto saying “we must — as a campus and community — be a place that respectfully engages in courageous conversations about our differences.”
