UK president Eli Capilouto is calling comments made by a speaker at the school’s Constitution Day celebration “offensive and appalling.”
The president delivered the remarks in a campus-wide email Friday.
In an email titled “Our Core Values,” Capilouto urges University of Kentucky students, faculty, and staff to answer write-in U.S. Senate candidate Robert Ransdell’s views with “a strong chorus of voices proudly embracing the value of each and every member of the community.”
During his speech to college and high school students on campus, Ransdell attacked Jews and other minorities before being cut off by event organizers.
In his response, Capilouto says everyone has the right to believe what they want to believe, but the language of hate aimed at the diminishment of anyone has no place at the university – a position he says the campus community must make clear “as loudly and as often as we can.”
