UK President Eli Capilouto Says University Needs To Improve Communications Regarding Layoffs
LEXINGTON, Ky. - In a campus-wide email, University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto apologized for any confusion resulting from the recent round of layoffs at the university.
Capilouto writes that UK “should have been clearer about the timing of decisions,” but defends the cuts, saying the university “cannot afford to wait for a better time to make tough choices.”The email also gives a more detailed picture of how various departments were affected.
Last week, UK announced it would be laying off 140 people, about 1 percent of its 14-thousand employees. According to the release, there were 64 layoffs in 18 colleges, UK Healthcare saw its ranks thin by 38 people, and 27 were let go in administrative and support units including IT, human resources, the art museum and institutional diversity.
UK’s Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote Tuesday on the next budget.
