UK President Delivers Budget Message Via YouTube

LEXINGTON, Ky. - In a video message posted to YouTube Monday, University of Kentucky president Eli Capilouto seeks to clarify the rationale behind this year’s difficult budget decisions.

In the four-and-a-half minute video, President Capilouto begins by acknowledging the frustration caused by cuts in this year’s budget, which resulted in 140 layoffs across campus.

"The concerns and questions raised are a reflection of how tied this university is to this community and the Commonwealth we serve," he says.

That community, specifically UK students, should remain the primary focus of the institution Capilouto argues. Overhauling what he calls “by far the oldest campus in the state” and guiding the undergraduate experience into the future are the main goals of the budget.

"We're making these commitments in a measured way, even as we face the same economic challenges that have confronted businesses, state and local governments, and schools across the country," Capilouto says.

The president highlights UK’s plan to keep next year’s tuition increase to 3 percent, hire more faculty, and keep the focus on what he calls the “promise” of UK.
