UK Officials Consider Easing Alcohol Restrictions

Associated Press

The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees is considering changes to the school's longstanding campus-wide ban on alcohol.

The new policy prescriptions come as part of larger set of Student Code of Conduct reforms recommended by a safety task force made up of faculty, students, staff, and representatives from nearby neighborhoods and local government.

As Student Affairs Vice President and chair of the task force Robert Mock explained to the board Friday, the change would permit only limited drinking on campus.

"The way it's proposed to be designed is that there's an ID verification process, that these are pre-registered events through the Office of Event planning, that there is security in place - and these do not exist in our residence halls," Mock said.

The proposal would allow alcohol at some Greek and alumni co-sponsored events.

A vote on the recommendations isn't slated until June.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
