UK Lifts Tailgating Restrictions, Working on Long-Term Plan

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Officials at the University of Kentucky say there needs to be a “culture change” to improve the safety of tailgating at football games.

Restrictions on alcohol use and tailgating activities near Commonwealth Stadium for last week’s UK football game have been lifted for Saturday’s matchup against Mississippi State.

Student President Stephen Bilas says student groups, along with university police and the administration, want to develop a long-term solution for the fighting and unsafe behavior stemming from the game versus Western Kentucky University last month.

“If the university proposes a plan of action that is not adoptable by the students, it’s a waste of everyone’s time.  So we have to figure out a way where we can make all parties happy. And I think this is a step in the right direction.”

Bilas says the university is contacting other schools in the Southeastern conference to help determine best practices for keeping fans and students happy and safe.

UK Police plan to have its usual number of officers patrolling the tailgating area on Saturday.
