UK Holds Tuition Briefing

By Alan Lytle

Lexington, KY – UK Vice President Angie Martin says quoting hard numbers is difficult since the General Assembly left Frankfort without passing a budget. One thing is for sure, the university will once again be asked to do more, with less money from the state. "and you can see we've had multiple mid-year budget cuts since two thousand one oh two. It makes it very difficult to plan very difficult for the institution to handle this because we are so heavily driven by personnel. Can you imagine in the middle of a semester going OK, we've gotta now close down these classes because some of our state money has gone away."

Ag Communications Senior Austin McNeil says he found several aspects of the briefing surprising. "one of them was that Georgia tuition rates are going up twenty-five percent and I just hope Kentucky doesn't do the same. They also compared us to OSU, which is going up eight point five percent and if we do that I don't know how students are going to cope with that."

Martin says the school will have a better idea of how much it intends to raise tuition when the Council on Postsecondary Education meets to set this year's parameters on Friday.
