Transylvania Food Fair Urges Visitors To Go Local
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Transylvania University hosted its second Local Food Fair Friday, bringing together a variety of area farmers and local food advocates.
Visitors to the fair were able to meet the faces behind their food – farmers from Stone Hedge, Acres of Harvest, and Marksbury Farm out of Lancaster, Kentucky. Cliff Swain with Marksbury says the event helps meet a growing demand for more accountability.
"It's just a great way for us to connect with folks that are interested in the things we're interested in, get them closer to their food, and be able to have these conversations one on one with folks that are asking tougher questions about where their food comes from," Swain says.
The food fair also invites visitors to purchase “shares” of harvested products from community farms. Customers then receive a box or basket of seasonal produce or other products throughout the growing season.
The event is sponsored by Transylvania’s Office of Sustainability.
