More than 40 dead or dying ash trees will soon be coming down in Lexington due to the devastation of the emerald ash borer.
City arborist John Saylor says taking down trees that show signs of damage is important because they can become brittle and unsafe.
The city says a tree can be treated early in an infestation. But without treatment, the trees die quickly. Limbs can break off, and sometimes an entire tree can snap off near the base.
Uninfected ash trees have to be treated to prevent infestation by the small green insect.
The trees being taken down by the city will be replaced in the fall.
