Thousands packed Robert F. Stephens Courthouse Plaza on Saturday for the annual Lexington Pride festival, one day after an historic U.S. Supreme Court ruling made same sex marriage legal in Kentucky and across the county.
Ponda Moody and Kim Spencer drove to Lexington from Mount Sterling as they normally do to attend the festival, but this year they stopped in Winchester on the way to pick up their marriage license. They said they have been together for 15 years and called it an historic day.
Chad Hundley, the festival's chairman, said organizers expected to have about 20,000 people attend the daylong event. But given the Supreme court's ruling, he expected the festival could attract as many as 24,000 people.
Lexington Mayor Jim Gray kicked off the festival by proclaiming it "historic pride day" in Lexington.
