That's Roadeo With An 'A'

A competitor in Fayette County's annual "Roadeo" uses a backhoe to pick up a golf ball on June 7 , 2017.

Don't listen for any whinnying horses, spinning lassos, or snorting bulls; instead it's horns and the hum of hulking road equipment at this rodeo.

That's because this particular test of skills is run by the Kentucky Department of Highways.

Dan Knight, the department's equipment supervisor, heads up the annual event. He says the competitors are people you pass on the roads every day.

"We've got 12 counties in our district and these are the equipment operators who maintain the roads," he explains. "They're the guys pushing the snow in the winter time. What we do, we get them together and this our safety conference, but it's also a competition. So we're keeping score on everyone that's competing."

Knight likens it to the "Olympics of road workers."
