Testing Time For State's Public Schools

By Alan Lytle

Lexington, KY – Teachers and students at every grade level in Kentucky Public Schools are entering one of the most important phases of the academic year.

"This is state testing time for our public schools", said Department of Education spokesperson Lisa Gross.

"The testing window actually opened up around the middle of April. This is really probably the first week that most parents will see a lot of testing from the state level for their students because this is one of the major windows in which schools may test. The actual period runs until May 20th."

Gross says the Kentucky Core Content Test helps schools determine how well they and their students are doing.

"Children in grades three through eight are tested in reading and mathematics plus they may be tested in social studies and in writing. At the high school level, reading and math is tested in tenth and eleventh grades respectively, and then science, social studies and writing is also tested at the high school level. Once the results of these tests come back, most likely in the late summer, we'll be able to make some determinations on how well schools and districts are doing and determine whether or not they need some help."

Gross says it's a common misconception that these tests help determine a school's funding. She says the test scores are used to help the state comply with the Federal No Child Left Behind Act.
