Supporters To Make Fifth Attempt At Statewide Anti-Smoking Law

Advocates for a comprehensive statewide anti-smoking law are set to press the issue for the fifth year in a row during the 2015 legislative session.

While Fayette Rep. Susan Westrom will once again push for a vote in the state House, Republican Sen. Julie Raque Adams says efforts to recruit support among newly elected lawmakers on the other end of the Capitol are already underway.

"I'm going to introduce it on the senate side this time, and I think there have already been several senators who have approached me that are new who said that they would like to sign on and participate in the effort," she says. "I'm just keeping my fingers crossed."

The legislation failed to gain traction in either chamber in 2014. Supporters blamed lobbying efforts by tobacco companies and a hesitance on the part of leadership to bring the bill to the floor in an election year.
