Students Talk About Career Plans in Operation Preparation

WINCHESTER, Ky. - They may be a few years away from graduation, but Kentucky 8th and 10th graders are already thinking about life after high school.

Sophomores made their way to the library at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester Monday. This week thousands of students across the state are sitting down with community volunteers to talk about career aspirations, and what it will take to meet those goals. The program is called Operation Preparation.

“The earlier you start planning, the more opportunity you’re going to have for yourself. If you wait until the end of your senior year to start planning for what you’re going to do after high school, it’s a little bit too late then,” says GRC guidance counselor Eric Osborn.

In addition to the Operation Preparation event, Kentucky students are asked to start thinking about future plans when they update their Individual Learning Plan.

“All students grade 6-12 complete an Individual Learning Plan every year that deals with their career interests, their goals as far as education beyond high school.  We will be using those to guide the conversation between the community member and the student,” says Osborn.

Last year Kentucky superintendents pledged to increase college and career readiness rates at least 50 percent by 2015.
