STEAM Academy Taking Applications For First Class
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Lexington’s STEAM Academy, slated to open in August 2013, is now accepting applications. The collaboration between Fayette County Public Schools and UK will provide personalized instruction, internships, and college credit opportunities for students.
The STEAM Academy’s first class will be made up of 150 incoming high school freshmen. All eighth-graders living in Fayette County are eligible and admission will be selected by a random lottery. Vicki Ritchie, director high schools in Fayette County, says that system is by design.
"We want this school to mirror the diversity of our entire city. We know that people bring different experiences. We know that people bring different talents. We know people bring different skill sets to a community," Ritchie says.
New groups of 150 students will be added each year until the total student body reaches 600. Applicants will find out in February if they have been accepted.
