S.T. Roach Community Conversation Series Opens at Lyric Theatre

The community conversations series is named for Coach S.T. Roach, who died in September.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Organizers for the new S. T. Roach Community Conversations Series are hoping to bring Lexington citizens together with monthly lectures and performances by black university professors.

"I think that it's really necessary and interesting because it's bringing the community together on provocative issues and topics," says Dr. Vershawn Ashanti Young, an associate professor of English at UK. "And anytime you can get a large number of people together from various classes and from different professions and walks of life to have a conversation that pertains to African-American life and existence, I think that it can only get better."

Young will keynote the series in April with a dramatic solo piece about black linguistics and culture. The series kicked off Thursday night with speeches honoring S.T. Roach, the Dunbar basketball coach for whom the series is named.
