Lexington, KY – During Stu Silberman's six year tenure as superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools, the rate of students earning proficient or distinguished scores in math and reading has climbed to around 75-percent. But for the thousands of kids still falling in the achievement gap, Silberman says more work must be done.

"Last school year in October, we declared war on the achievement gaps, and said that it's just not acceptable to us and we're going to do everything that it takes to eliminate those gaps."

In a "State of your Public Schools" talk presented by Commerce Lexington Tuesday morning, Silberman says principals and teachers are implementing proven blueprints that work in making a connection with kids.

"It went from 50 to 75 percent, moving our kids into proficiency, but we're not going to be happy until we're at that 100 percent mark. Because that's our responsibility, is to get all kids to proficiency."

Also at Tuesday's event, Fayette County Public Schools held an inaugural Golden Apple awards ceremony honoring six community partners who have volunteered at Lexington schools.
