Shooting Off Campus Prompts Public Safety Notice

Oct 21, 2013

Lexington police say a 22-year-old man was shot late Sunday night after two men assaulted him near the University of Kentucky campus.

Officers responded around 11:30 PM to a report of an assault involving a weapon around the 1500 block of Elizabeth Street. Police spokesperson Sherelle Roberts says the victim told officers the men followed him home and tried to make their way inside when a fight broke out.

The two attackers fled when a woman who also lived at the residence fired a warning shot. UK Chandler Hospital staff determined that a wound on the victim’s head was not from a gunshot.

The Lexington herald-Leader reports investigating officers saw marijuana and drug-related materials at the shooting scene. The female at the residence was cited for tampering with physical evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The incident prompted a Public Safety Notice by the University of Kentucky Police Department. It identified one suspect as a black male with long dreadlocks pulled back into a ponytail and urged anyone with information to call the Lexington Division of Police at (859) 258-3600 or UK Police at (859) 257-8573.
