Seat Belt Campaign Moves to Evening Hours

By Brenna Angel

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Lexington Division of Police is expanding its "Click it or Ticket" campaign. Beginning Feb. 14, patrol officers will be conducting the seat belt enforcement blitz during evening hours. Officer Alvin Cook says there's a lower rate of seat belt usage when the sun goes down.

"We'll be positioning officers at intersections. We'll have an observer out there we'll call a spotter."

Cook says the effort is modeled after a similar program developed by the Washington State Patrol. Flood lights will be set up at some Lexington intersections.

"We can brighten the intersection up to give that spotter the extra opportunity to see that you're not wearing your seat belt," says Cook.

An officer -- either in uniform or in plain clothes -- will stand on a corner and watch for drivers not wearing a seat belt. He or she will then radio ahead to another officer, who will pull the driver over and issue the citation. The citation carries a $25 fine.

Operation Night Life runs through March 12.
