Search Underway For New Police Chief

Lexington Division of Police Chief Ronnie Bastin

With Lexington Police Chief Ronnie Bastin on track to become Lexington’s next Public Safety Commissioner, the search for a new top cop is already underway.

Bastin has been the face of the Lexington Police Department for six years, but now the hunt for his replacement has turned the spotlight on the committee tasked with sending their recommendations to Mayor Jim Gray.

While no official candidates have been put forward, a handful of likely contenders from inside and outside the department are expected to land on the list. Vice Mayor Linda Gorton tells the Lexington Herald-Leader the council has always leaned toward internal candidates that already have a working knowledge of the daily operations at the department.

Among the names being floated: Assistant Chiefs Mark Barnard of the Bureau of Investigation, Dwayne Holman with the Bureau of Patrol, Ronald Compton of the Bureau of Administration, and Lawrence Weathers who heads up the Bureau of Special Operations.

Both city officials and committee members have expressed agreement that the next chief should continue and build on many of the reforms instituted by Chief Bastin during his tenure.
