Runaway Teen Tearfully Pleads Not Guilty

One of two teenage sweethearts who are suspected in a multi-state crime spree of stolen vehicles and pilfered checks has returned to Kentucky to face several charges including statutory rape.

18-year-old Dalton Hayes was in tears during his arraignment Thursday afternoon at the Grayson County courthouse. He pleaded not guilty to charges that included statutory rape, custodial interference, criminal mischief, trespassing, theft and burglary. Dalton left Kentucky with his 13-year old girlfriend Cheyenne Phillips and the two went on a multi-state crime spree and were caught last weekend in Florida.  In a jailhouse interview, Hayes claimed the pair was with Cheyenne’s mother when she was reported missing.  “I was like what are you talking about?  Didn’t he know where you was?”  Hayes said she told him her father knew they were there and refused to go home so he decided to go with her to keep her safe.

Hayes also says he didn’t know Cheyenne was 13 until long after they began dating.  He also alleges she wanted to run away because she was being abused, a claim her father denies.  Police say the two stole cars, money and checks.  Hayes has been given a public defender and a $250,000 cash bond.  Phillips is expected to face charges in juvenile court.  Her mother also faces charges of custodial interference.
