Richmond Officer Shot During Robbery Investigation Has Died

The Ellis Family

An endless line of police cruisers escorted Officer Daniel Ellis' body to Frankfort around 4:30 this morning.  Kentucky State Police Officials then confirmed that Ellis had died early Friday morning.

Richmond Police Officer Daniel Ellis was ambushed and shot in the head when he went to an apartment building Wednesday morning to investigate an attempted robbery.  Ellis was rushed to the UK Medical Center where family, friends and countless fellow law enforcement officers from across the state held vigil and prayed for his recovery. His uncle, David Ellis said the support has been overwhelming. “There have been some police officers in the waiting room asleep on the floor.  They never left all night.  It means a lot.  That means a lot.  There’s a brotherhood there and a sisterhood.  They’re a family.  The people that are praying and the messages that come over social media and the news and the prayer vigils you know, sometimes when we get to this point that’s all we have.  We have prayer and we have our faith.”

Investigators say when Ellis arrived at the apartment on Ballard Drive, 24-year old Gregory Ratliff let him inside and said he was the only one home and there were no guns inside.  When Ellis entered a back bedroom, 34-year old Raleigh Sizemore shot him.  Sizemore was also shot and taken to the hospital but was released yesterday and has been charged with attempted murder and unlawful imprisonment.   Ratliff is charged with complicity to commit murder of a police officer.  A third person, 44-year old Rita Creech has been charged with robbery.  All three are being held in the Madison County Detention Center.

An expense fund has been set up at Edward Jones Bank in Richmond.  Checks can be made payable to
