Bowling Green, KY – People wanting to make donations to help the victims of recent tornadoes and flooding are advised not to send clothing or building materials at this time. Dan Modlin of Kentucky Public Radio has this report.

Although relief agencies trying to help storm victims appreciate the idea, they say gifts of money, not materials, are the most efficient way to help.

Bill Schlicht of the South Central Kentucky chapter of the Red Cross says the cost of transporting, managing, and storing materials can create a number of issues.

It makes it easier if folks can donate money instead of goods, because it can often slow down the distribution rather than speed it up."

Schlicht says volunteers from Kentucky have recently been helping in Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Joplin, Missouri.
