Ready or Not, Cats to Open Season Against Maryland

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The UK men’s basketball team is ranked number 3 in the nation as it starts regular season play Friday, but Coach John Calipari says the Wildcats have a lot of work to do.

Kentucky faces Maryland at the Barclays Center in New York.

“They play great position defense, they don’t give you a whole lot, they don’t turn it over a whole lot, they try to take good shots every time down. They’re not going to beat themselves,” Calipari said of the Terps. “And we’ll see if we’re ready to beat a basketball team. I’m just not sure, they’re going to have to show me.”

Point guard Ryan Harrow sat out of Wednesday’s practice because of flu-like symptoms and Julius Mays is still recovering from a leg strain, so their status for the game is unclear.

Calipari says he may try to visit some neighborhoods damaged by Superstorm Sandy. On Wednesday the UK the basketball team helped host a telethon that raised $500,000 for storm relief efforts.

UK tips-off against Maryland Friday at 8:30 pm. The game will be televised on ESPN.
