Public Safety Issues Dominate Conversation In Mayoral Debate

WTVQ TV

Public safety dominated the conversation last night during a debate between Lexington’s mayoral candidates.

Jim Gray and Anthany Beatty differed on what needs to be done to improve the situation.

According to the Lexington Herald Leader incumbent Gray said the city is safer than towns similar in size, and that his administration has spent millions of dollars on police and fire improvements over his 3 and a half years.

Challenger Anthany Beatty, an administrator at the University of Kentucky and a former Lexington Police Chief, countered that even more needs to be done, especially the hiring of more uniformed officers.

The candidates also fielded questions on Rupp Arena, payroll taxes, and cracking down on texting while driving.

The forum at Spencerian College was sponsored by the Eastland Neighborhood Association and  moderated by the League of Women Voters.

WUKY will broadcast a LIVE Town and Gown forum featuring Gray and Beatty on Tuesday October 28th at UK’s Worsham Theatre.  Additional information is available here.
