Public Can Say Goodbye to Smarty Jones

By Brenna Angel

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A central Kentucky horse farm is giving the public a chance to say goodbye to Smarty Jones before he leaves the Bluegrass State. The 2004 Kentucky Derby winner is making an indefinite move to Philadelphia for the upcoming breeding season.

Smarty Jones started his stud career at Three Chimneys Farm in Woodford County, where spokeswoman Jen Roytz says he's always been a fan favorite.

"He was every man's horse. He came from Pennsylvania, which is not really a hot-bed of Kentucky Derby winners, and he just kept exceeding every bar set for him. He never lost a race until he lost the Belmont Stakes in the Triple Crown, and he only lost that by a length."

Three Chimneys is hosting a free open house Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fans will be able to see Smarty Jones and take pictures.

"People are allowed to come out, take pictures, just enjoy the afternoon and see Smarty once last time here at Three Chimneys. We're probably going to have a lot of people coming all at once so we're going to be parking them in a field which is right next to our office," says Roytz.

The farm is located at 1981 Old Frankfort Pike in Versailles. A final date has not been set for the horse's move to Ghost Ridge Farm in Pennsylvania.
