Poll: Opposition To Same-Sex Marriage Inches Up Ahead Of High Court Decision

Associated Press

A majority of Kentuckians continue to support the state’s same-sex marriage ban – that’s according to a Bluegrass Poll unveiled Thursday.

National polls continue to show a clear trend in favor of gay marriage, with a recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey putting support at 59 percent. Contrast that with the latest Bluegrass numbers, which reveal opposition to same-sex marriage actually inching back up seven points in Kentucky since last July to 57 percent.

Fairness Campaign’s Chris Hartman interprets the reversal this way.

"As opponents see that the Supreme Court is moving toward mostly likely making a decision in favor of the LGBT freedom to marry, the opposition is getting louder, a bit more fervent. So it doesn't surprise me that as they lose ground on this issue that there's a bit of a backlash," Hartman tells WUKY.

But the conservative Family Foundation reads the numbers differently. They see an indicator that Kentuckians remain committed to marriage as one man and one woman despite the dramatic shift in opinion taking place across the country.

Still, opposition has dropped considerably since the state voted by a margin of 74 percent to enact its constitutional ban in 2004.
