Police Suspect Pappy Van Winkle Heist Was An Inside Job

There are new wrinkles in the Pappy Van Winkle heist saga. Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton says he thinks the heist was an inside job.

The 65 cases of the prized bourbon remain unaccounted for, but officials are now offering a more detailed picture of how they believe the heist went down and where they think the $26,000 dollar’s worth of Pappy Van Winkle might be.

"It's just not in Kentucky. A few states away, but I think it's gone," Melton tells WKYT-TV.

He describes the crime as a large-scale heist likely requiring a delivery truck.

"I think that's highly likely, based on the investigation, where we've been, and what we know," he says.

As for the culprits, the sheriff thinks the robbery suggests the involvement of high-ranking employees with both the access and the know-how to navigate the Buffalo Trace operation. While Melton did not reveal whether any suspects have been identified, he did reiterate the hope that the sizeable $10,000 reward will produce the tips needed to solve the case.
