Picnic With The Pops To Feature Songs Of Elton John
Lexington, Ky. -- Now in its 35th year, the Lexington Picnic with the Pops summer concert event returns to Keeneland once again this year for a two-night event taking place Friday, Aug. 15, and Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014. This year, the event will feature guest artist Michael Cavanaugh, performing The Songs of Elton John and more! with the Lexington Philharmonic, under the direction of conductor Scott Terrell.
A charismatic performer who was handpicked by Billy Joel for a starring role in the Grammy- and Tony-nominated Broadway production "Movin' Out" (featuring the music of Joel), Cavanaugh was named "Corporate Entertainer of the Year" in 2013 by Reuters. His high energy symphony orchestra performances invoke the spirit of classic singer / songwriters with live, full symphony orchestra accompaniment.
Michael Cavanaugh in Concert: The Songs of Elton John & More is the second in Cavanaugh's "Generations of Rock" symphony series, with a dynamic set list featuring creative reinterpretations of classic Elton John hits, interspersed with additional songs by rock-n-roll legends Styx, Wings, The Eagles and more. This annual outdoor event takes place in the idyllic venue of Keeneland's Meadow, located near the Keene Barn.
New this year, Picnic with the Pops will offer on-site food trucks and beverage vendors. Minton's on the Go and Fork in the Road Mobile Galley will each offer a menu of delectable dining options; wine and local beer options will also be available for purchase. As in years past, patrons are still permitted to bring a picnic dinner or hire a caterer at their will.
Tickets are now on sale at Ticketmaster outlets and the Lexington Center Box Office, with general admission / blanket seating tickets starting at $15 in advance ($20 at the gate) and Tables of 8 ranging from $200-300. New this year: children under the age of 12 will be admitted at no charge. Table holders are encouraged to participate in the annual Table Decorating Contest, taking the Elton John theme of the evening into consideration; local "celebrity" judges will decide the winners of the contest each night. Gates open at 6 p.m., with the show starting at dusk (around 8:30 p.m.).

Run by a volunteer commission appointed by the mayor's office, Picnic with the Pops has been presenting annual outdoor concert programs in Lexington since the early 1980s, with guest artists to have included Matt Dusk: Live From Las Vegas; Little Anthony and the Imperials; and Cirque de la Symphonie.
