Paul Sounds Familiar Themes In Commerce Lexington Speech

By Alan Lytle

Lexington, KY – Kentucky U.S. Senator Rand Paul sounded familiar themes of limited government, significant spending cuts, and entitlement reform during a Commerce Lexington Public Policy Luncheon Monday. The Republican from Bowling Green says the only way to address the nation's ballooning debt problem is massive cuts in discretionary spending.

"This year we will spend more money than we did last year. We haven't reduced the amount of spending. This year our deficit will be greater than last year. So are we really doing anything? They said they were going to cut 38 billion, which pales in comparison to one point six trillion. It's virtually a rounding error. But it turns out even the 38 billion when scored by the Congressional Budget Office wasn't real either. Turns out it was about 300 million."

Paul says he's not in favor of President Obama's plan to combine spending cuts with tax increases on the wealthy. He says that will short circuit small business growth.

Paul also told the crowd, unlike some of his colleagues, he welcomes the chance to tackle long-standing entitlement issues, including fixing Social Security, because he's not afraid of not being re- elected.
