Party Chair Chides GOP Candidates For Not Releasing Tax Returns

Frankfort, KY – The head of the Kentucky Democratic Party wants two Republican gubernatorial candidates to release their income tax returns. Dan Logsdon says Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear annually makes his returns public. Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeigh has more.

In 1991, Sen. David Williams was campaign manager for gubernatorial candidate Larry Hopkins. Williams accused Hopkins' Republican opponent Larry Forgy of being "arrogant" for refusing to release ten years of tax returns. But now, Williams, who's running for governor, is refusing to do the same thing. That's hypocritical says Kentucky Democratic Party Chairman Dan Logsdon.

"When running for governor, a person has an obligation to be honest, open and transparent with the people of Kentucky."

Williams' campaign manager Scott Jennings says public information on Williams' finances is readily available.

"David has been filing financial disclosure forms with the Legislative Branch Ethics Commission since 1993, and this year filed an additional form with the Executive Branch Ethics Commission as a candidate. These forms outline financial interests, income, property holdings, gifts, business dealings, investments and debts."

Logsdon says Republican gubernatorial hopeful Phil Moffett should release at least one year of tax returns, but Moffett's campaign manager says it's not going to happen.

Republican candidate Bobbie Holsclaw says she will release her returns.
