FRANKFORT, Ky. -- – Tornado sirens will sound and weather alert radios will activate across the Commonwealth Tuesday morning. As Kentucky Emergency Management spokesman Buddy Rogers explains, it's part of an annual safety test.

"The National Weather Service will actually trigger a tornado alert code through their equipment that will send out and broadcast a message encouraging everyone to conduct a tornado safety drill, and then at that opportunity to also review their emergency plan."

Rogers says the test alert will sound around 10:07 a.m. EST Tuesday. Officials recommend designating a tornado shelter in an interior room on the lowest level of a building, away from windows. "If a person has conducted their safety drills and they've reviewed their emergency plans, they're better prepared when the actual event occurs. And you're not caught off guard," says Rogers.

Governor Beshear has declared March Severe Weather Awareness Month in Kentucky.

Tornadoes touched down in Kentucky last week in Lincoln, Henry, and Jefferson counties.
