A Lexington police officer who pleaded guilty to harassing a teenage referee at a soccer game is resigning from his position.
The move comes months after the incident.
Officer Keith Spears turned in his letter of resignation to the mayor and the Chief of Police Thursday. Investigators charge that Spears grabbed the 13-year-old referee’s arm during an argument. He pleaded guilty to one count of harassment without contact.
Now, he’s set to resign at the end of the month due to a disability.
One issue that could continue to put him at odds with the city: the disability retirement procedure. Spears indicated in his resignation letter that he intends to move forward with the process, but the city says his conduct was at issue before he filed the pension application.
