New Sign Installed To Tell Of Douglass Park's History

Sadye Mascia

One of Lexington’s most historically significant public parks is getting a makeover thanks to several community and business groups.

When it opened in 1916 Douglass Park on Georgetown Street was the only gathering spot in Lexington specifically designated for African Americans.

A new sign commemorating the 100th anniversary and future use of the park was dedicated at a ceremony earlier today.

A key aspect of that mission will include convincing people in the community that the park is safe for families.

Last summer three people were wounded and one died as a result of a still unsolved shooting incident during a basketball tournament.
