Frankfort, KY – Gurney Norman, director of the University of Kentucky Creative Writing program, is the state's new Poet Laureate. Induction ceremonies at the State Capitol included readings by Norman and four previous Poets Laureate. Norman, who was raised in Virginia and Eastern Kentucky, will spend the next couple of years traveling the commonwealth. "I'm already getting invitations, visiting communities and schools and so on. And actually, for the last many years, I've been doing that very thing, but mostly here in the eastern part of the state."
Norman, who has been teaching at UK for almost thirty years, is a novelist, editor and critic. He has written and narrated three documentaries, and small, dramatic films have been produced from three of his short stories.
