New Gallery To Inspire, Promote Colon Cancer Screenings

By Alan Lytle

Lexington, KY – A unique temporary photo gallery is now on display at UK's Markey Cancer Center. Faces of Colon Cancer, features portraits of nine Kentuckians from all walks of life, who are fighting, and winning their battle with the disease. The project is the brainchild of Debra Armstrong, Director of UK's Kentucky Cancer Program.

"We thought if we could get representatives from across Kentucky who have had had colon cancer, maybe share a little bit of information about their experiences, and then take that to other communities and share that with them, that it would encourage people to get screened."

Colon Cancer survivor John Paul Amis, who's been the Superintendent for Perry County Public Schools for 17 years, credits a colonoscopy for saving his life.

"Oh absolutely, if you can do the screenings and have those pre-cancerous polyps removed, colon cancer they say is ninety percent preventable. And of course I wasn't one of them that went for screenings. I had to be forced to go and have a screening done by my physician but that saved my life and luckily, I haven't had complications since then."

The photo gallery is on display at the Markey Cancer Center until September 10th and will then become a traveling exhibit for other communities throughout Central and Eastern Kentucky.
