NAACP Plans Rally At Lexington Catholic High School

Lexington Catholic High School, which has been hit with claims of racial and sexual discrimination in recent months, will be the scene of an NAACP rally today.

Several former students have claimed they were harassed because of their race or their gender during their time at the school and at least six have an attorney. The school's board responded by creating a new committee to oversee ethics and diversity, but a release sent last night, by the local chapter of the NAACP said they have met twice with the Bishop John Stowe of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lexington and they haven’t seen a commitment to change.

Lexington Catholic President Dr. Steve Angelucci released the following statement

“First, Lexington Catholic High School in no way wants to stand in the way of any organization’s right to gather in a peaceful dialogue about pertinent issues. After all, one of the fundamentals of the early Christian movement was civil disobedience. That being said, today’s disruption of the learning environment for the students at LCHS is regrettable.

The school has heard community concerns previously and moved proactively and aggressively to address them, including engaging Dr. Roger Cleveland and his team of experts to offer sensitivity training at LCHS, which has already started.

Beyond that, there is nothing to be added that has not already been stated.”

The rally is set to begin at 9 am.
