More Fireworks Could Fly in Kentucky

By Stu Johnson - Kentucky Public Radio

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- – There are occasional verbal fireworks' between lawmakers in Frankfort. But the real thing has been a topic of discussion this legislative session. On Friday, the Senate approved a bill which paves the way for the sale of fireworks previously sold only in neighboring states.

Scott county senator Damon Thayer spoke in favor of the bill

"We know of many people out there who have to go to other states to buy their fireworks and they're taking their business there, they're taking their tax dollars there."

Thayer says the licensing provisions would also allow public safety officials to know where fireworks are made and stored. But Lexington Senator Kathy Stein cast a no vote.

"I was contacted by Fayette Countians who expressed a great deal of concern for particularly horses that fireworks going off are very harmful to them from time to time."

The bill prohibits the sale of these fireworks to anyone under age 18. The measure rests with Governor Beshear.
