Montessori High School Growing, Moves to New Location

LEXINGTON, Ky. - What started as a small school of about a dozen students in a Lexington church basement has now more than doubled and outgrown its original space.

“We knew that we would need more space because even without a major recruitment effort, we had growth in the school,” says school director Linda Connolly.

The school opened last year with 11 students and enrollment is now over two dozen.

Social studies teacher Marshall Herbst says faculty, administrators and students have been busy getting the new space ready.

“It’s a wonderful ability for us to really sculpt our learning space around our curriculum and around our content so that the students can look around and see the wonder of the world around them, and we’re able to draw the outside in.”

Montessori High School is the first high school in the state that follows the Montessori philosophy of independent learning and discovery.

Lexington native Brenna Angel anchored local morning newscasts for WUKY through May 13. She joined the station in March 2010 after previously working for WHAS-AM in Louisville.
