Frankfort, KY – It was just a short walk for Dr. Mongiardo, from his office at the State Capitol to the Secretary of State's office, to sign his paperwork and pay his filing fee to run for U-S Senate. The lieutenant governor, accompanied by his wife Allison and daughter Kathryn, says he's in the race to win. "And I'm the one candidate in this race who has a record of standing up and working across the aisle, or even standing up against my own party, when it's the right thing to do."

Mongiardo is the fifth Democrat to qualify for the May 18th primary. His biggest Democratic rival, Attorney General Jack Conway, qualified earlier this week. They're seeking the seat currently held by Republican U-S Senator Jim Bunning, who's not seeking re-election. Five Republicans are also in the race.
