Mayor: Problems At Jail & E-911 Center Must Stop

By Brenna Angel

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Lexington Mayor Jim Gray is cracking down on problems at the jail and with the city's Enhanced-911 department. At a news conference Thursday afternoon, Gray announced the assignment of Deputy Police Chief David Boggs to examine the Fayette County Detention Center, and Senior Adviser Glenn Brown to investigate E-911.

"Now many of you know that the jail has been the subject of a number of lawsuits and two investigations are ongoing today. E-911 has experienced really ongoing and perpetual problems with staffing, overtime costs, and employee complaints," Gray said.

A mayoral transition team has already issued preliminary suggestions, and a review of the jail by the sheriff's department is underway. Gray says the latest investigation will be more hands-on.

"When you have management problems sometimes you have to overwhelm the project with good management. And that's what we're doing here today. We're putting senior, experienced people on these issues."

The mayor would not describe specific problems or say if the investigation would result a management shake-up. He says he wants to get a clear assessment of the issues before making any premature decisions. CLICK HERE to view the report from the mayor's public safety transition team. [PDF}
