Lexington Mayor Jim Gray has tapped 1st District Councilmember Chris Ford to be the city’s new Commissioner of Social Services.
In a news release from the Mayor's office Gray says “Chris is passionate about helping people who need it, and about stretching our resources to serve as many people as possible.” Ford’s career has included extensive experience in city and state government with roles that focused on housing, finance and grants administration.
“I am honored by Mayor Gray’s confidence and for this opportunity to lead the group of dedicated professionals in our Department of Social Services,” Ford said. “In partnership with the Urban County Council and our local network of social service providers, we will remain focused on empowering families and neighborhoods.”
Ford has been a member of the Urban County Council since 2011, working to reduce violence across the city and especially in his District, and fighting for funding for affordable housing. Ford has also advocated for expanding local workforce and job training programs, and he currently chairs the Council’s General Government and Social Services Committee.
Ford holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from Western Kentucky University, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky, where he also was a member of the varsity football team.
Ford and his wife, Talesha, have four boys.
Ford’s appointment is subject to Council approval. His confirmation hearing is set for March 17. He is scheduled to start as Commissioner on March 23, replacing Beth Mills, who retired.
Mayor Gray said he will make an appointment soon to fill Ford’s Council seat. “People in the First District are used to strong representation on Council and my goal is to make sure that continues,” Gray said. The next election for the seat will be in November.
