Marksberry Ends Independent Run For Senate

U.S. Senate hopeful Ed Marksberry is ending his congressional bid about 2,500 signatures shy of the 5,000 needed to add his name to the ballot.

According to cn2 Pure Politics, Marksberry is citing health problems as the reason for ending his campaign.

The Owensboro building contractor made headlines as the first Democrat to enter the Kentucky Senate race in December 2012. The candidate also made waves when he filed suit against the party for sending out a fundraising email that touted the candidacy of Alison Lundergan Grimes during the primary – a suit he later dropped.

Marksberry eventually exited the primary and chose to run as an Independent in September of last year, but he says he’s not had the strength or energy to complete the signature-gathering process.

He also says the campaign was never about winning, but instead bringing a progressive voice to the race.
